Some stories fit into a short story format as snugly as a handkerchief into a pocket while others, more bulky, must be pressed, carefully arranged and cajoled into layers of a novel like clothes in a suitcase.

  1. There was a time when the proper short story had to meet certain artistic features, basically distinguishing it from a novel (or “novella”) by focusing on just one person or event or ‘thing.’ Newspaper competitions that one would enter usually demanded this standard.

  2. I think that was the golden age of short stories when magazines like Colliers, Playboy , the Strand and others published them.
