Today

When I went to the bakery and asked for a fruit bun,

The woman said,

“That’ll be $1.60 today.”

So I said,

“What was it yesterday? What will it be tomorrow?”

And she said,

“Pardon?”

“Does the price of fruit buns fluctuate

Like the price of petrol?”

I asked.

“Is there a standard by which it is measured

Like Texas Crude?

Does it depend on the rising or falling dollar?”

By this time the crowd

Was building up.

“That’ll be $1.60,” she said.

There was no mention of ‘today’.
